Taking it up one more level: D1 college hockey to the women’s pro league: WWHL

The biggest jump from playing D1 college hockey in the WCHA to playing in the Western Women’s Hockey League (WWHL) with the Minnesota Whitecaps has been the physical play and the overall flow of the game. Playing all of our games against Canadian teams makes the game more physical, but it’s fun. Playing those teams, there is a lot more body contact and stick work. It took a few shifts to get use to but it’s fun to play that rough and tough hockey. Hockey players are some of the toughest athletes out there, I mean come on, just look at the NHL. The other thing that was a big difference was how the game is played. There is a lot more stress on controlling the puck and not playing the “get over the red and dump it” style. It is great because it creates a lot more offensive opportunities and scoring chances. It’s a really fun style to play and it’s the way hockey should be played.

Overall, those two things have been the biggest difference from playing college hockey to the Whitecaps. The speed maybe be a little faster but not like the jump from High School to College.
